A Day In The Life of a CNA

Nurse Nae has been kind enough to video portions of her day as a CNA in the Mother/Baby Unit of her hospital. She goes quite in-depth with the in-and-outs of her work and we appreciate your efforts Nurse Nae!

Here is what you might expect as a new CNA working in the same type of environment as Nurse Nae.

As a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) working in the mother/baby unit of a hospital, you will likely be responsible for providing basic nursing care to postpartum mothers and their newborns. Some of your typical responsibilities may include:

  1. Assisting new mothers with breastfeeding, including positioning, latching, and troubleshooting common problems.
  2. Providing routine newborn care, such as taking vital signs, monitoring feeding and elimination, and checking for signs of jaundice or other medical issues.
  3. Assisting with bathing and diapering newborns.
  4. Assisting with postpartum recovery, including helping with toileting and ambulation.
  5. Monitoring and reporting changes in a mother’s or baby’s condition to the nursing staff.
  6. Providing emotional support to new mothers and their families.
  7. Maintaining a clean and safe environment for mothers and babies.

It’s important to note that working in a mother/baby unit can be emotionally demanding, as you will be working with new mothers and newborns who may be experiencing a range of emotions and physical challenges. However, it can also be incredibly rewarding to be a part of such an important and joyous time in people’s lives.
